Uncontrolled Interleukin-1-Beta (IL-1ß): The Underlying Cause
Mutated cryopyrin found in CAPS (cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome) sufferers stimulates a certain type of white blood cell to overproduce interleukin-1-beta (IL-1ß). This activity is often triggered by cold temperature.
When a trigger is present, cryopyrin assembles with other molecules to coordinate an inflammatory response. This response causes overproduction of IL-1ß, which leads to inflammation, resulting in the symptoms seen in CAPS (cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome).
